226

u/OstrichSmoothe Sep 12 '22

I can’t believe the range master allowed him to film right there. Must be a private range

101

u/MeasurementGrand879 Sep 13 '22

Private range, with blanks, practicing for a movie.

74

u/HeinousAnoose Sep 13 '22

I mean to be fair, if he accidentally flagged the cameraman with one of those bursts, he’d get hit with a shit ton of wadding. People have been killed by a single blank from the wadding so I’d imagine a minigun would do some serious damage lol

39

u/MeasurementGrand879 Sep 13 '22

No doubt. Blanks from that range and cyclic rate would destroy anything in front of it.

just like me.

7

u/DapperTarget1238 Sep 13 '22

Its not really possible. To carry and shoot yeah, its heavy ash dont get me wrong, but it is possible. The ammo is a whole different story, as well as having to shoot consistant rates of fire that require you guessed it, ammo. If you shoot this like a normal machine gun in bursts you will jam it up and it requires some work to get running again.

4

u/PrestigiousMention Sep 13 '22

Also it requires a couple car batteries cause it needs a lot of electricity. Unfortunately the hand held mini gun lives only in the world of movie magic

51

u/Famous-Drawing1215 Sep 12 '22

That one was probably maintained well, and stored properly away from the lovely sea air! HMGs 50cals are better at stopping fiacs anyway.

17

u/nurplethepurple Sep 12 '22

Despite the sea air the navy takes better care of their equipment than any other branch.

19

u/HubeiSpicyLung Sep 13 '22

That sounds like it's because of the sea air rather than in spite of it.

I think he's talking about the thing the orcs used to break the door at Gondor. You know, Grond

7

u/SplatMySocks Sep 12 '22

Its only 7.62 Nato, 6000RPM so depending on ammo you're looking at 6-10k for a full minute of non stop shooting. You're probably thinking of the Vulcan 20MM or GAU-8 30MM which can't be fired by hand.

10

u/gabbagool3 Sep 13 '22 edited Sep 13 '22

7.62 minigun can't be fired by hand either. though i have a suspicion this might be a 5.56 for picture only unit

4

u/Double_Minimum Sep 13 '22

It says 1000 rounds in title, so it would likely be less than $2,000

And are you sure that’s not 5.56?

Also, I find the area that they are shooting very odd, and they didn’t show any down range.

I have a feeling they are blanks, and the white backdrop is for photos

Camera man trying to get cut in half

31

u/xiam007 Sep 12 '22

How much per bullet?

39

u/Suck_The_Future Sep 12 '22

Assuming 7.62x51 NATO, about $.90 - $1.50 cpr depending on brand and quality.

-10

u/Madd_Mo Sep 12 '22

If that was .51 he would be running backward, it is 223 which is about 30cents which total to around 300? Idk but it is not 51, people cant shoulder fire that round in full auto

12

u/Suck_The_Future Sep 12 '22

He's an NFL tight end and he's struggling to hold it while it pushes him backwards - that's why he's standing like that.

1

u/Madd_Mo Sep 12 '22

Wtf just look at the shells, does they look like 51 to you?

6

u/Suck_The_Future Sep 12 '22

Yes...?

7.62x51mm casings are basically 3" long... are you sure you're not thinking of 7.62x39mm (AK round, .308 equivalent-ish)?

Here they are next to each other.

The dude is a size 16 shoe, just look at the brass near his feet.

→ More replies

-3

u/Madd_Mo Sep 12 '22

Seen some dudes struggle with .51 and he is holding it with his forearms, people have hard time with disc grinder in that position, also there is channel in YT for a gun range in vegas that rents miniguns in the range theyre all converted to 223

5

u/Suck_The_Future Sep 12 '22

You've seen NFL players struggle with a disc grinder? He's 6'6" and over 250lbs. 75% of his actual job is working out.

Here's a video of a very average looking guy shooting a short burst from a 7.62x51 minigun (@~45sec).

You can see that he does not immediately die or comically fly backwards - it is therefore reasonable to assume (in my opinion) that a professional athlete would be able to hold bursts like Gronk does in the original video.

Don't really feel like debating anymore, take it as you will.

Edit: former NFL player. Don't really follow football that closely.

2

u/RockerRabbit Sep 12 '22

yo why is the camera man in front of the gun 💀 my training is making me scream

2

u/Fomalhot Sep 12 '22

How much is that in money?

2

u/TheRubyBlade Sep 14 '22

Miniguns are typically chambered in .308, which at current prices can range from ~60 cents to over a dollar a round. Miniguns have a adjustable fire rate, which can range from 2000 to 6000 rpm, but one of the most common settings seems to be 3000 rpm, or 50 rounds per second.

Assuming the higher end of the price for .308, thats 50$ per second of continuous fire, or 1000$ for around 20 seconds. Of course this is just in ammunition, not including the cost of the gun itself, which i would assume is fairly expensive to rent out for a minute or so.
