This is Dr. Donald Cline - A fertility doctor who illegally fathered 94 children - He discarded donated sperm & replaced it with his own - He served a one-year suspended sentence for his atrocities Image

From Wikipedia:
There is a high presence of auto-immune disorders among Cline's donor-fathered children. Cline's own auto-immune condition, rheumatoid arthritis, would have excluded him as an eligible sperm donor at his own clinic.
Many of the donor-children live within a 25-mile radius of each other. Their concern with consanguinity and its potential genetic disorders increases as their own children grow up and develop intimate relationships.
*Edit:
There is a series about this story on Netflix/Hulu, it's very interesting
He was accidentally the gynaecologist for one of his daughters
He has been sued in civil court by some of those affected, settling for over $1m so far, with more suits to follow.

There are some lucky bastards who have high immune disease resistance, amazing health factors and metabolism, and no family history of early death. They hit the genetic lottery.
You would expect the asshole who does this to be one of those people, justifying it with their lucky genetics. But no. It's an asshole passing on auto-immune diseases.

Worse than sucks. My wife and I are working through assisted fertility, and the chance this happens is small but fucking terrifying to me. What would I do? If we didn’t care about making a biological offspring, we would adopt. But this guy?
The hypothetical of some doctor planting his seed in my wife non-consensually and having us raise a child that isn’t mine? In this world full of atrocities, this one cuts among the deepest of unforgivable sins.

Watch the Netflix documentary if you can. It’s incredibly disturbing and several of the impregnated women called it rape but the state law had a different definition for it, so the prosecutor refused to bring it to a grand jury. They could only go after it at a malpractice or fraud angle, which means he got just a slap on the wrist.
51
u/hilarymeggin Feb 05 '23
I watched the documentary. I can’t BELIEVE there are no criminal charges they could get this guy on!! One of his victims made the point, of a guy spit on me, that would be assault, but a guy can put his semen inside my body??
I would add, if a hospital deliberately gave me the wrong baby, that would be a crime, right?
I hope state legislatures across the nation are updating their definitions of rape as we speak.

Morally, emotionally, and in terms of trauma, you’re right. Legally? This is unfortunately only a crime in 11 states. It’s something donor-conceived people are advocating for at a federal level but in spite of over 50 doctors having done this, they’re being told it doesn’t happen so why bother with regulation.

Edit: Im highly aware there was a chance, it just never occurred to me that the majority of people seeking treatment with him would be living in such a vicinity that they would be going to school, work, bars, even church together… the chance was more like a going to happen!!

You pretty much had to move away, as my father did.
24
u/rockthrowing Feb 04 '23
Exactly. That’s the problem. Not everyone has undergone genetic testing. There’s no telling how many kids he actually has. So it’s extremely possible that half siblings could hook up or first cousins.
First cousins (and in this case they would be half first cousins) really isn’t too bad genetically but if they both have the autoimmune disorder (and many of them do) it can definitely cause problems. But the real issue is first cousins having children who then end up having children with their first or second cousins and continuing the cycle, bc again, not everyone is aware of their genetic background.

There's a Netflix documentary on this that came out less than a year ago, and as of that time there were no cases of his kids unknowingly having relationships or reproducing. There have been connections, such "oh I know her, she's my mom's hairdresser" sort of thing, but none of that kind.
But they talk about, after discovering that they are one of their siblings, talking to their teens about the potential of future partners being a half cousin.
It's something that no one should have to go through, that's for sure.

u/ASMRSleepZzzz Feb 04 '23
Paternity testing started in the 80s and using DNA in criminal proceedings started then as well.
But the beginnings paternity testing didn't have as high confidence at first and was extremely expensive. Maybe he thought the costs wouldn't become more affordable for a very long time? Or maybe he thought they weren't reliable enough in the beginning?
The full Human Genome Project wasn't completed until 2003. That's crazy to me.

From what I remember, there was no appropriate law for this type of conduct at the time in his area. In fact there aren't a lot of laws for artificially inseminating a woman purposely with the "wrong donor". In the documentary they explained that it doesn't fall under sexual assault so he pretty much got away with it because of the lack of the laws.

u/spinx248 Feb 05 '23
The spirit of sexual assault laws cover this. What’s on paper does not explicitly cover this so prosecutors and the courts are hesitant. This is when the legislature should step up and clarify by introducing new language that is retroactive to make sure this asshole goes down for rape, SA, etc..

Or would that have signed a clause in the contract stating that they can't claim child support from the supposed father? Because surely there have been some crazy people in the past who have tracked down the donor of the sperm and tried to claim it's the father's baby and tried getting child support that way?

As someone current undergoing IVF I can explain a little bit behind some of the legal stuff. In the documentary (no idea how accurate it is but let’s assume it’s 100% accurate for this sake), he replaced the sperm from couples actively undergoing IVF among other awful things. The embryo that was intended to be made would have been legally owned by the mother and father. However, in order to donate sperm, you do sign your parental rights away. If you donate sperm, eggs, or embryos, some clinics will have additional legal options where you can select if you are open to contact in the future or communication of certain needs (family history, etc). That still doesn’t make the child the legal responsibility of the donor, however. Also, there isn’t any requirements that donor medical issues that develop later in life be communicated to the recipients so they can use sperm that potentially has some serious genetic issues lying in wait and never communicate it.
Long story short, they probably could try to go after him for child support since he very clearly voided the legal ownership of those parents right to their embryos. At minimum, I think they could manage some kind of damages. There is a bunch of legal hoopla with this kinda stuff though so it could be very different from the legality of it all in my area.

u/Potential_Month_8632 Feb 04 '23

Based on the Wiki page OP linked, the problem is there just weren't laws against this in his state at the time. He was brought up on obstruction of justice for lying to the court, not for the actual fraud. The good news is 1. he's paid over $1mil settling lawsuits so far with more pending and 2. lobbying after this case has resulted in fertility fraud being made a felony in his state.

Restaurant manager here. The cooks really never fuck with anyone's food, I promise. If you want to be worried though, my top 3 things to avoid in restaurants is: 1. Lemons, they are rarely washed, lots of hands touch them, and they go into your drink. 2. The condiments on the tables and the salt and pepper shakers. They are wiped down once a day, max. If you touch them with your hands, use some hand sanitizer at the very least before you eat any finger foods. People can have poop hands, especially children, and children touch every single thing on the table. 3. Draft beer. While I can attest to our restaurant having the lines cleaned once a month, nobody actually enforces it, and even doing it that frequently, I've seen mold. Now, one could argue that alcohol kills germs, and honestly, I've never heard of someone getting sick from a dirty draft line, so do with that what you will. The soda machine can get pretty nasty if it isn't cleaned correctly too.

I mean- One of the cases in the doc showed that he impregnated women who weren't even there for fertility reasons, got one poor chick who was just there for a pelvic exam. With all due respect, might wanna get dna tested.

They should all come back to collect back child support
52
u/wavebreker Feb 04 '23
Lmao they should've sentenced him with that
28
u/Pleasant_Carpenter55 Feb 04 '23
Even if he only paid 200$ per child per month, which is super low that would be just under 20,000$ a month. He knowingly did this so sounds like a good punishment to me.

u/Papaofmonsters Feb 04 '23
Indiana limits child support claims to 10 years after the child turns 18. The last child was born in 1987 so that window closed in 2015.

Important to note that he discarded the sperm of HUSBANDS and fertilized women who thought they were receiving their HUSBAND’s sperm. He would also jerk off in his office TO IMMEDIATELY use. This sometimes occurred after the physical exam of the women who were there for the fertilization process (I.e. he would see them naked, or even complete a gentian exam, then leave the room to “go get the specimen”).
This was sexual assault on the women. He robbed men of fatherhood. And has refused contact with the children he fathered. Not to mention the money he made FROM THE COUPLES through medical billings. Infertility treatments (especially at the time) are expensive and not typically covered under most insurance policies. There are even special loans you can take out now for these kinds of treatments.
One year suspended sentence. That’s it.

We can all help hold these drs accountable. ACT now! See how in the link below. Also, with the commercial dna tests they have found approximately 60 Drs. that have done this and more that are still doing this today without the patients consent. Be the change!! Email your congressman. There is a bill out right NOW waiting to make it to the house floor!!!

The crazy thing is I have a near and dear friend who shared with me two years ago that Dr. Cline is his father. He went his whole life wondering why he and his brother look so unrelated. His wife gifted him one of the ancestry kits for Xmas and was the way he found out.

The even more fucked up thing is that what he did isn’t even illegal in most states; there’s no law on the books that prohibit it. And apparently it was somewhat common practice for many years. Absolutely fucked.

We need to create a definition of medical rape and a mandatory prison sentence to punish this. He should be serving a life sentence as a sex offender.

Cline fathered nearly 100 children during the 1970s and 1980s while using his own sperm to impregnate dozens of unsuspecting patients, according to court documents. These women were told by Cline that the donors were medical residents and that he used each donor for only three successful pregnancies.Jul 6, 2022

I believe there’s a Netflix documentary about him and the reason not much happened was because he was a respected person somewhere high up in the church.. not surprised tbh since they protect pedos as well

This is going to keep happening. There's very little regulation in this space and not seeing much on the horizon.

The worst part is that a lot of the 94 were couples that were struggling in conceiving and trusted this guy to help, they were not just looking for donated sperm. A lot of fathers thought for years they were the biological fathers. Just think how terrible it would feel to all involved once they found out.

I had just watched the Netflix documentary about a week prior to seeing him, at 7 am, walking into a Starbucks on the north side of Indianapolis. I couldn’t help but Yell out the window “Dr Cline” when he turned towards my car, he quickly began securing back to his car. I then proceeded to shout “You are such a discussing piece of shit. You probably should continue carrying that gun! I wouldn’t be surprised if one of those 50+ children, you genetically raped, shoots your ass”!
He was using his cane to walk and had a sidearm strapped to his side. I just couldn’t believe he had the nerve to show his face anywhere around his community or infertility clinic (this Starbucks is blocks away). I have referred many patients to him, in the past, and just couldn’t believe that his prestigious Fertility success was because he was using his sperm to inseminate his pts!
On a side note, I am not one to shout at people, but found myself standing up for those he has devastated.
No time in jail, unbelievable! (But then again we are in Indiana, where until recently the age of consent was 14)!
