It looks like it's from 1959. Seriously that's the bomb that Wylie Coyote would try to drop on the road runner.

u/shamrocksmash Sep 24 '22

Gonna blow your mind, a lot of bombs are from WW2/Korean war.

Source: It my job to know bombs

238

u/DragonfruitAsleep976 Sep 24 '22

Are they safe to even store? I'm Cambodian and heard stories of old Khmer rouge stockpile just going off in the jungle. Or is it just the tropical climate react to it differently?

260

u/shamrocksmash Sep 24 '22

Lack of care. If you do nothing to them they will fall apart, rust, leak and the chemicals can react with water.

64

u/Intrepid_Ad2507 Sep 24 '22

How do you care for them? Buff it up with WD40? Genuine question, this is rather interesting... and frightening.

u/HydraAnn Sep 25 '22

Taking care of storage unit is also big deal, isn't it? /s

For real, if there is high humidity it's gonna rust in no time. Big changes in temperature can break structure over time and so on. So nice isolation and ventilation and you have happy Little Boy.

A lot of modern weaponry is inspired or based on WW2/Korean War designs, or even WW1. Ma Deuce, MG 3, AKM, Model 870. Hell, the development of precursors to modern M109A7 started the same year the "Green Berets" were established. It's crazy how some of the military equipment we call modern originated so long ago.

55

u/shamrocksmash Sep 24 '22

The amount that is stockpiled from back then and is still in use soooo much later is insane! We just adjust little things here and there and boom, cool update. Much more expensive to make something from scratch than to adapt an older model to facilitate your needs.

40

u/neoalfa Sep 24 '22

Below nuclear payload, an explosion is an explosion. It's the delivery system that improves.

u/Blugha Sep 24 '22

It's true of many things military I suspect. Modern gas-cycled firearms in general, are using the basics of a design that is over 100 yrs old. The Colt 45 was designed in 1911. Such weapons have been refined of course (delayed blow-back etc) but the basic mechanism is from the 1900s. "Modern" cartridges use an even older basic design. Plasma rifles are nowhere to be seen.

5

u/shamrocksmash Sep 25 '22

Fucking nailed it.

18

u/bingold49 Sep 24 '22

What's the shelf life of a bomb like this?

39

u/shamrocksmash Sep 24 '22

Well, if taken care correctly and no manufacturing defects, they should last....well at least 75 years as far as I'm aware lol.

10

u/whelven_soul Sep 24 '22

when it expires, does it explode? genuine question

15

u/porntla62 Sep 24 '22

The compounds slowly break down over time.

The breakdown products are less stable than the original explosive.

3

u/nipponnuck Sep 24 '22

So…is it more or less likely to explosive?

6

u/CaptRustyShackleford Sep 24 '22

More likely for surprises.

5

u/porntla62 Sep 24 '22

Less stable means slightly less powerful explosion but more likely to go off

7

u/shamrocksmash Sep 24 '22

Na mostly just become unstable, like dynamite, which grow crystals and can go boom at bad times if jostled around.

Companies and other agencies test "expired" ones and then determine how long they can keep them around without loss of efficiency. Even then, old stuff still gets used in one way or another.

7

u/YaolinGuai Sep 24 '22

Ill stop jostling my dynamite then

4

u/FearNot_The_Reaper Sep 24 '22

Jostling my dynamite is the only thing that gives me a thrill. Not gonna stop, even if there's a fire.

I mean when this was originally posted, some ex military guy said that Russia had mastered the timing of the bombs to be most effective, and letting it stay without it exploding will make people think that they can just approach it which when they inevitably detonate it, will kill much more than if they just dropped it and let it explode

I know it's incredibly wrong and there's no excuse for this. But reading these kind of things since the start of this war slowly makes me wish for nothing more than seeing that entire country wiped off the map..

It's becoming increasingly hard to seperating hate towards a regime from hate to a country. Its very wrong. But man is it hard, REALLY hard to not fall into the hatred pit that so many of our grandparents had towards Germans..

It is an everyday thing to find these (Soviet and American) on construction sites in Hungary. Many didn't blow up and people lived their lives not knowing about it for 70+ years, which is terrifying. When they find them, they evacuate the area until specialists defuse and take it away.

Very likely that this will be the case in Ukraine as well. Sad how a war can shape the everyday lives of people for generations to come.

Just one of the many: https://hungarytoday.hu/ww2-bomb-budapest-hungary-13-district/

They spent too much on this one. First they manufactured it, stored it for decades, then used fuel to take it there with a plane, risked the lives of their airmen, and then dropped the bomb which managed to achieve little to no destruction.
