Abraham Lincoln in 1861 vs 1865 shows a 4 year difference during wartime. Lincoln once said, “I am a tired man. Sometimes, I think I am the tiredest man on the planet". Image

The photo on the left is May 1858. His Inauguration in 1861 sported a full beard. A collection of photos are here: https://clickamericana.com/topics/celebrities-famous-people/see-the-first-and-last-photos-of-abraham-lincoln

I was struck by his nose growth, more than his wrinkles. 4 years seemed implausible

If you had a pencil-sized pallywhacker you’d lash out too. Just go be pithy and cute and leave me to my #2 Ticonderoga misery

Your ears and nose never stop growing, plus it’s commonly believed he had a growth disorder—Marfan’s?

Doesn't anyone in the world think they are the tiredest in the world at some point in life?
14
u/DocMeow3 Dec 01 '22
Every first time parent feels that. Sleep deprivation and war though…I (thankfully) can’t imagine.

I spent 7 months in Afghanistan, and went from 174 lbs to 129 lbs. When I came home, everyone kept telling me how sick I looked. That was in pretty good conditions. I can only imagine life in the American Civil War. War is hell.

I’m curious what his voice sounded like
12
Dec 01 '22
Apparently his voice was shrill, nasal, and just generally annoying. No recordings exist, but maybe that’s for the best.

Lincoln always seemed like a odd looking guy so not surprised his voice wasn't too regular either

u/gate_of_steiner85 Dec 01 '22
I dunno, if he sounded anything like the voice DDL used for him in Lincoln, it wouldn't be too bad. Definitely not what one would expect though.

DDL supposedly did a fantastic job of imitating his voice in Lincoln. Being the actor that he is and all. I believe there are actually audio recordings of Lincoln that he went off of.

u/WahooSS238 Dec 02 '22
The worlds oldest audio recording (that survives) is from long after Lincoln died.

All presidents age quickly in office. President years are like dog years.

u/NoButterfly7257 Dec 01 '22
Of course he was tired. He never got any sleep having to fight Vampires.

u/Karnorkla Dec 01 '22
It's amazing that we had him just when we needed him. An incredible human being.

Gwyneth Paltrow once said "Some days I feel like everyone in my world has plugged themselves into my kidneys. I'm so tired."

Only if you have the wherewithal not to over do it. Cause it can also definitely ruin your life much faster than spray cheese.

The funny thing is that zelensky was a comedian before he became the president. It goes to show that no matter your background, you can rise up to do amazing things when needed.

God, this man was NOT a looker.
9
u/guruofsnot Dec 01 '22
I think he was unconventionally handsome. He was certainly interesting to look at and there was obviously a lot going on behind those eyes.
3
u/Octopugilist Dec 01 '22
He's got a real Willem Dafoe thing
2
u/Ultrawhiner Dec 02 '22
Agreed. Neither of those two are conventionally handsome but there’s just something about them..

He didn't look as bad as these photos portray. Cameras back then weren't great at picking up red coloring, instead turning it grey or black. He was actually a lot smoother in the face than he looks here; the lines on his face are exaggerated.

u/AnastasiaNo70 Dec 05 '22
Mary Todd Lincoln said he always smelled faintly of wood smoke (I’m sure most people did), but she absolutely loved it. And him. He was a gentle, affectionate, devoted husband.

TIL war has roughly the same aging effect as meth.

I don't know if tiredest is a word but I gotta cut the man some slack he looks exhausted.

His "final rest" wasn't even that peaceful. If you have time to spare, go look up the attempt to rob his body from the grave. Crazy stuff.

I thought South Park was exaggerating when they talked about how ugly Lincoln was.

If you check out some Lincoln photos from a year earlier, he looked fine. I have always thought he was suffering from disease, cancer or leukemia - that's the look of illness, I think.

u/Red-is-suspicious Dec 01 '22
His eyes and lips give me Cillian Murphy vibes but then it disappears into a slump of malnutrition and fatigue.

I have seen this many times and I just can’t believe it’s a fact. The war ended in 1865 so I guess with the stress it’s possible but wow…just wow

I’d be curious to see some photos of the front line soldiers during the Civil War. Before enlisting and after a couple years of fighting.

Two hours ago I posted a news article from 1861 reporting Lincoln almost getting trampled at a stopover in Buffalo on his way to his inauguration in Washington DC and it was immediately rejected. Who or what on earth is/are these nonsensical overseers/control freaks who decide what gets seen and what does not? How is a newspaper article from 1861 regarded as inappropriate? Reddit is absolute shit.

u/georgemarred Dec 02 '22
Haven't seen one president come out of the white house not looking many years older than the 4 or 8 years they served. It's a tough job.
1
u/AnastasiaNo70 Dec 05 '22
Trump didn’t look much worse, but then he also didn’t actually do anything.

Dude, this sounds super sketchy...but if i could take one president out for drinks to just relax for one night..it would be Lincoln.

u/Little_DeadFishie Dec 01 '22
So the assassin did a good deed. The president said he felt like the tiredest person in the world. All the assassin did was put him to sleep forever.

, “I am a tired man. Sometimes, I think I am the tiredest man on the planet".
Well.........I hope he's resting well

He was handling the stress of keeping the nation together, his child dyings and wife depressed, hundreds of thousands of dead soldiers, and being the president. Those lines on his face truly represent how much he went through.
