Someone once said that the measure of a person's virtue can be determined by how they behave when they think nobody is watching.

And dumb people feel like they're alone when they're behind the wheel.

Driving, as an act, shows us very clearly who people really are. That and how we deal with shopping carts when we're done using them.

89

u/supergnaw Aug 17 '22

The other day as I was returning my shopping cart I was astounded at the number of carts just pushed up against the return, right on the side, just feet away from where they really needed to be. How lazy are you, really?

52

u/Danni293 Aug 17 '22

I went to the store a couple weeks ago and the only free parking spot was blocked by an abandoned cart square in the middle of the spot. Like what kind of asshole do you have to be to think that's an acceptable thing to do?

8

u/clumsy-archer Aug 17 '22

Crazy, I went the store one day and as I brought my cart to the corral a fun that already had a cart took mine and put it back at the entrance. He wins the virtue contest.

2

u/Need-More-Gore Aug 17 '22

It's better than the guys who just leave em next to their car atleast

4

u/YouToot Aug 18 '22

I routinely push my cart left and right to get all the stray carts together when I'm done shopping.

Also my mom just donated a bike... and I helped her put it in the trunk.

I'm almost too good.

Especially when driving. I’m in the American southwest, and for some reason people in this area are absolutely obsessed with getting into the left lane and purposely slowing down traffic (the left lane being the passing lane here).

Multiple times a month in local groups there are arguments over this and I can’t believe how many people feel it’s somehow their right to try to police other drivers’ speeding. They want to get over there and endanger everyone, including themselves, because they don’t like the idea that people are going over the speed limit

They are just entitled assholes, and that’s the bottom line. I’ve watched these arguments play out literally hundreds of times and it’s always just that they are assholes who think they should be able to control what other people are doing

29

u/Faptain__Marvel Aug 17 '22

I've seen cops pull people over for this in Dallas, Tx.

17

u/ranchojasper Aug 17 '22

I really wish that would happen here! We do occasionally have actual police officers that join these threads in these groups when this happens and try to explain to these people that they are making things worse by trying to coast in the passing lane and of course it doesn’t even help

17

u/Faptain__Marvel Aug 18 '22

It was me. I was one of the people that cops pulled over. I was 17 and driving on 35 for the first time, cowering in the right hand lane. The state trooper's exact words were, "if you can't keep up with traffic, get off my fucking highway."

15

u/Dirty_Hertz Aug 18 '22

Sounds like a good lesson. Also, kudos for doing it in the right lane

11

u/spyson Aug 17 '22

I mainly drive in the right lane on highways and it's not great on the right lane either. When I try to merge onto the highway there's always some douch canoe who could have maintained his speed, but speeds up thinking it's a race to pass me only to then slow down and maintain his previous speed.

Or even worst, they speed up to try and pass me to only then get off on the next exit.

8

u/katzen_mutter Aug 18 '22

I think they like the ability to control people because they have a life where they feel they have no control over anything. Same kind of people are the ones on the HOA boards.

5

u/saltyDog_73 Aug 18 '22

In certain locales, they can be cited for “impeding the flow of traffic”

9

u/Plusquevie Aug 18 '22

my favorite is when youre in the left lane in zero traffic and someone comes up on your ass speeding way above the limit so you get over to let them pass and then they slow down and just stay next to you

3

u/ArthurBea Aug 18 '22

Driving on a freeway is one of the great equalizers. You can be a plastic surgeon or a convenience store clerk, but your car on the freeway is equal to any other car. You can block traffic, speed, cut people off, honk, slow down, no matter how much money or power you have off the freeway.

Some cars arguably have more power, but it doesn’t make a difference when part of a driver’s arsenal is the prolonged game of chicken, in which case it doesn’t matter if you have a 4x4, a BMW or an old Yaris.

For some people, the freeway is the only place they have power, for some it’s an extension of it, and they’re happy to abuse it.

I don't get it. Even if I DID want to be a massive douchebag for no reason, the road just isn't the place to do it. There was no wreck here but there could have been if that bus driver hadn't noticed the guy pulling up to fuck things up on purpose.

FWIW the worst thing you can do to these people is act like they don't exist and aren't having any effect on you. Same thing with trolls, hence the old-as-the-internet rule of "do not feed".

The opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference. Just ignore them as much as possible, do not give them any sort of attention.

3

u/Need-More-Gore Aug 17 '22

Or remove them from society the proper reaction

4

u/Discotime_Windu Aug 17 '22

I hope the trucks pulled a little squeeze on the douchebag just to fuck with him a bit, like he did with the bus.

22

u/BionicSLP Aug 17 '22

Don't you hate it when people just slowly stroll across a road or parking lot. It's a little bit of power for them, I guess, to slow people down and block traffic.

9

u/Wet_possom Aug 17 '22

And then when you pass them where it's legal to pass theyy start honking and finally speed up, to ride your ass.

It seems to be on the rise, at least in my area. I was behind a car at a red light .5 miles before the turn to my house. Car in front accelerates on green very slowly, going 30 in a 50 after .25 miles.

So, I blinker left and move into the left lane to speed up and get in front of them. What do they do? RAPIDLY accelerate before I can get in front of them, and match speed with the car in front of me.

Like, what the fuck? It ends anticlimactically because I just get behind them after a few seconds to turn right onto my street, but people behave like that all the time these days, and I really don't understand what they get out of it.

3

u/Tyrannyofshould Aug 18 '22

I realized a while ago that I would rather get a speeding ticket and be in front of these types of people instead of stressing over their antics and what stupid thing they will do next.

People are dumb. Brake checking trucks that exponentially outweigh them..brake checking on motorcycles. The list can go on and on.

25

u/Koivel Aug 17 '22

This behavior is way too common that it appears. As a truck driver myself, i get brake checked, blocked from turning, people suddenly changing lanes when im already halfway changed, almost ran off the road, cut off dangerously, road ragers, you name it. People see a large well known logo and all they see are dollar signs. That and people enjoy having a reason to threaten and yell at someone, must be a pathetic life to do things like this in such dangerous environments.

There are literally people who see someone turn their blinker on and see it as a challenge.

Random driver: "I would like to enter this lane as soon as it's safe please."

Random asshole: "I will risk my life and the lives of all the unsuspecting drivers around us to ensure that you will never enter this lane!"

At least that's how it feels when driving in Connecticut. I almost sometimes feel like people are justified in this state to not indicate when trying to change lanes, because so many assholes here will try and stop you for no fucking reason as soon as they see the blinker turn on.

18

u/poorbred Aug 17 '22 edited Aug 17 '22

Nashville was the same way when I lived there.

At first I thought it was random coincidence but then I decided to test it. I'd find an opening with plenty of room for a safe lane change and turn on my blinker. A surprising number of cars would suddenly speed up to cut me off.

When I changed jobs there was an intersection I had to take between 2 interstates and a surface street. As i, I was on highway A, would take the ramp onto highway B, but that ramp also served as the exit from B to a street and so I just stayed on it without merging onto B. Again a sad number of people would try to prevent me from merging onto B for whatever dumb reason and I'd just laugh as I took the exit to the street.

20

u/SonOfMcGee Aug 18 '22

I had an old roommate that drove pointlessly aggressively. I was his passenger once in a situation like that where a guy on the on-ramp wanted to merge into our lane and my roommate desperately tried to stop him.
Something bugged him about the guy trying to get in front of us. But when you’re merging and roughly even with another car you just gotta make a decision to tap the breaks and go behind or goose the throttle and go in front. He had chosen to goose the throttle and my roommate was like, “Absolutely not” and gunned it to make sure the poor guy couldn’t get in without slamming on his breaks to go behind us.
But that isn’t the worst part. The worst part was that on-ramp turned into an exit and it was my roommate’s exit. After denying this stranger the merge and almost running him off the road, my roommate slowed down and transferred to the exit lane.

11

u/doulasus Aug 18 '22

I used to think that, so I started an experiment. I would turn on my blinker when I had room to pull into the lane. When the person who would now be behind me would start to accelerate to block me, I would go ahead and pull in front anyway to see how they would react.

One or two would get angry, but the vast majority look like they just woke up. Suddenly there was a car in front of them, and they couldn’t figure out where it came from.

My conclusion is that the vast majority of drivers brains are on some form of autopilot and have no idea you signaled your intent, just some lizard brain - car coming, must get out of the way.

I am not in New York or Boston. I feel like things may be different there.

6

u/ms_boogie Aug 17 '22

My partner didn’t understand why I would only turn on my blinker and then turn into a lane AFTER I checked it was clear, instead of signaling to other drivers that I wanted to turn.

It’s because more often than not where I’m from, they’ll deliberately make it harder for you to turn if they see you indicating. That’s why I wait for them to pass first, and then decide to turn on my blinker lol.

6

u/ZappySnap Aug 18 '22

Holy shit you aren't kidding. I recently did a fairly long road trip up the east coast, and as soon as I entered Connecticut it's like all the drivers went fucking insane. I've never seen so many stupidly aggressive drivers.

16

People saying it's an insurance fraud thing are just daft. The idea is to get into an accident without actually getting hurt. You don't pick a fight with a bus that weighs 20 times what your car does.

3

u/DirtyBeastie Aug 17 '22

Except that trucks that weight 40 times a car are the most common target for cash for crash insurance scams. Because they know that they always have good insurance that will pay out. And they know the bus will, too. They'll just pull onto the shoulder as the bus makes contact.

Trying to stay in a presumed blind spot. Insurance scam?

16

u/KillNyetheSilenceGuy Aug 17 '22

Doubt it, the insurance scam would be to get in front and slam on the brakes. If the bus is speeding up and slowing down to get around him, he knows he's there and isn't going to hit him.

It's conspicuous consumption for attention. The same way someone in Europe might buy a Corvette or a giant American pickup truck, not because they need the vehicle or it's the best performance for the money, but because it shows everyone they spent extra money to buy a fancy imported car.

Yeah I was a bus driver for 25 years - this would happen fairly often.

You signal and move over into a big gap ... but the other driver is texting or otherwise not paying attention and looks up to see you moving over and decides to block you.

The thing they don't realize is that I have to move over, and I'll slow down, then stop and wait until it's clear. I'm not going off route and I'm getting paid regardless. I've set the brakes and pulled out the newspaper while waiting for the idiot to move or the cops to attend, whichever comes first.

274

u/snek-jazz Aug 17 '22

lol never thought about it like this. The other driver is driving to get somewhere, you're already at work.

58

u/roll20sucks Aug 18 '22

Best coworker I had would always say something like "You can tell who is getting paid to drive and who isn't by how calm they are on the road."

16

u/Cruxius Aug 17 '22

Here in Queensland they came up with a simple solution: buses have right of way, so if a bus is indicating you must yield. The bus driver could have merged and hit him and the BMW driver would been at fault.

6

u/Barijazz251 Aug 18 '22

We have that law too but the company will discipline you for that. You have to take all reasonable actions to avoid contact.

68

u/sleepydorian Aug 17 '22

My friend decided to slow down to let him in just as the cop also slowed down, obviously wanting to move in behind us. But my friend kept slowing down until both cars were at a dead stop on the freeway. Finally, the cop rolled down his window and yelled at us to get the fuck out of there. My friend hit the gas and nothing else happened but it was hilarious.

That or flipping the lights

I learned many years ago that once a semi truck has clearance passing you it's courtesy to flash your lights to signal the trucker he's clear to change lanes

I usually get a thank you flash afterwards

212

u/BouncingSphinx Aug 17 '22

Flash lights during day, blink them off at night if you can.

61

u/nDRIUZ Aug 17 '22

37

u/WIbigdog Aug 17 '22 edited Aug 17 '22

Yeah, don't flash at night. It's very disorienting if we're looking at you in the mirror, which we have to do for longer than usual to judge how far back you are. An eye full of high beam while doing that is not pleasant.

65

u/Wheeliebin533 Aug 17 '22 edited Aug 17 '22

If you flash onto your high beams during the night, people might get blinded, so it’s a better idea to momentarily blink your lights off to signal it’s clear.

Edit: Clear to move over, if the vehicle is overtaking you on a multi-lane road. Apologies for missing this bit off originally!

u/ahh-potatoes Aug 17 '22

I don't get why it's such a universal thing. Other luxury brands get their share of dickheads as well, but it seems nearly every BMW is an absolute cretin

90

u/AzureWrath501 Aug 17 '22

Maybe if they're a complete tool they get a "dickhead discount", or perhaps prove they failed their driving test at least 3 times

51

u/DistinctFailure Aug 17 '22

Can confirm.

Source: am BMW owner and received aforementioned ‘dickhead discount’

u/aChileanDude Aug 17 '22

Sorry for your loss.

u/AlphawolfAJ Aug 17 '22

Can confirm. I own a BMW and occasionally when I drive it I feel like I intentionally need to not use my turn signal or aggressively change gears for no reason purely to uphold the stereotype. I don’t do it in my truck though

3

u/NoPattern1 Aug 18 '22

Next year turn signals will probably be a subscription service for BMW.

I don't get why it's such a universal thing.

It's just confirmation bias. I think VW drivers are worse, because as a result I usually see them being jackasses more than BMW.

27

u/shorey66 Aug 17 '22

Nah, Audi drivers are pinnacle of asshole driving.

16

u/boondoggie42 Aug 17 '22

They're just uppity VW drivers, so I agree.

land rovers... some entitled people drive those... they can do no wrong in their own minds.

22

u/Preacherjonson Aug 17 '22

I find it's the Range Rovers specifically.

u/altruios Aug 17 '22

now that you mention it...

That music made this the most relaxing driving altercation video ever.

u/GodLovesUgly_8 Aug 17 '22

The other car is a real AH

That's such a Hong Kong thing. So many drivers there are unnecessarily aggressive because they either a) need to save face and seek revenge for the fact that you just passed them or b) prevent themselves from losing face (by letting other people in front of them). If you are a friendly driver, they get confused and don't know what to do.

4

u/whitewashed_mexicant Aug 18 '22

I don’t know why I didn’t even think of the “face”-bullshit as a thing on the road, too. 🤦‍♂️

That was a beautiful maneuver. It's so difficult to NOT hate BMW drivers when they are always on video being jack holes.

12

u/Emergency_Ninja8580 Aug 17 '22

I would call it a malicious compliance move, it’s etiquette amongst truckers & bus drivers (anything over C class) to help each other out. Sometimes even coordinating over CB radio. Never seen a driver attempt to ram their way out of it though.

38

u/pikes_wheelchair Aug 17 '22

I hate people that lane guard.

98

u/shieldwolfchz Aug 17 '22

There was a video with about the same situation, except instead of a bus it was a 3rd semi. The 3 trucks boxes the a hole in and beat the shot out of him.

25

u/catdog918 Aug 17 '22

How can I find this video

3

u/780to702 Aug 17 '22

It pops up every now and then. I've seen it posted multiple times

Impressed with the safe maneuver. I don’t get why the driver was pacing the bus.

As a general rule, how people drive is a great representation of how people act. This is Hong Kong, where I live, and there are a lot of selfish arseholes in this city. Some of the worst and most dangerous drivers I've encountered.

60

u/ZEIN_O Aug 17 '22

Do you expect a bmw driver to understand what turn signals means?

24

u/LZYX Aug 17 '22

That guy is blinking his lights at me? The audacity!

7

u/CosmicCreeperz Aug 17 '22

I was thinking more… “how is he flashing one light like that? It’s sorcery!!”

3

u/Quaiche Aug 17 '22

He perfectly understood what he was doing...

6

u/CannotFuckingBelieve Aug 17 '22

For those curious, the song is 后来的我们 by 王理文.

8

u/Elected_Dictator Aug 17 '22

Don’t fuck with public transport, I know a lot of bus drivers can be dicks on the road. But if you make the transport late, all those people will turn on you.

There’s a video from the last few days of some guy Sparta Kicking a woman off the Philly subway because she kept pulling the doors open thus holding the train.

Normally that would be very frowned upon but the second she “made the train late” any sympathy got kicked out along with her. People were happy he gave her a brutal kick cause they got shit todo.

Wow this brings me so much joy, thanks!

4

u/snorkiebarbados Aug 17 '22

No little light dance to say thank you? That's my favorite part of being a truckie

4

u/RE2017 Aug 17 '22

Bros helping bros. That flash of the hazards by the bus when they completed the lane change says it all.

4

u/MagicalTaint Aug 17 '22

I love this truck driver so much.

Little knob in his 320d

4

u/queefiest Aug 18 '22

When I was in bus training they told me in regards to switching lanes: Signal adequately, and move over. You’re the bigger vehicle so cars will yield if they know better. At the time I thought that was brash and risky, but sometimes that’s what you have to do. Mind, this is another country from the one in video.

24

u/ysyson Aug 17 '22

Is it always a BMW?

3

u/Cushingura Aug 17 '22

Was hoping they crush him between the two trucks. They have much more nerves than me I guess.

that's why truckers are professionals and everybody else is an amateur

58

u/trouser-chowder Aug 17 '22 edited Aug 17 '22

Truckers get paid to drive, so are technically "professionals." That did not mean they behave "professionally." Many of them are unmitigated assholes on the road.

4

u/SCP239 Aug 17 '22

Yea, my parents like to tell me how back in the 70s and 80s you wanted to be around truckers because they really knew what they were doing and they were a lot safer than typical drivers. Now it's 50/50 if the trucker is the one causing all the issues.

6

u/disco_S2 Aug 17 '22

The only 50/50 with truckers today is which one will instigate the uphill elephant race at +5km faster and fuck all the other drivers who can actually accelerate.

3

u/SCP239 Aug 17 '22

I did deal with one today who decided to block my entire side of the highway so it could pull into the median and wait until the other side cleared up enough for them to pull out.
