Meta Introducing the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) wiki!

Hi,

We just set up an initial version of a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) wiki. You can check it out here .

This is something we've been working on for awhile. Special shoutout to /u/stillcouldbeworse for actually finally getting it up and running! This initial version is pretty short to keep it simple and avoid breaking anything, but we expect to be adding to it regularly now that it's up and running. We'll of course be mentioning it in the sidebar or the full wiki as well.

Since this is the first public iteration, you can expect some tweaking as we figure out how to best utilize it. Features/questions/formats might change. And now is probably a good time to ask a few questions for the community-

What are some things you want to see in the FAQ wiki?

How do you want to see the FAQ wiki utilized? (ie, should automod sticky a comment linking to the FAQ wiki? filter out FAQs?)

How should it be sourced? Should it link to existing posts (either in this sub or another), external sources?

What threshold do you consider acceptable to be a FAQ?

Any other requests/ideas/questions?

And last- while one of the goals here is to help promote a bit more variety in OPs, it is still NOT OK to question-shame FAQs. You can direct them to the FAQ wiki, but do so politely and kindly. You will get a ban, per Rule 1, for rude replies to questions. We get that FAQ posts can be a bit annoying for longtime users, but we still expect you to be polite about it.

Guide to Filtering Reddit

With Link Flair, you can use Reddits built in filter function to better tailor your Reddit experience to fit what you're interested in. Below are brief guides on how to browse specific content or simply remove certain content from your front page.

List of Flairs Currently in Use on /r/TooAfraidToAsk

  • Culture & Society
  • Education and school

  • Race & Privilege
  • Mental Health

Desktop

Users using Old Reddit can do so with RES

If you don't have Reddit Enhancement Suite Click here to get it!

  1. Open your RES Console

  2. Open Subreddits, then FilteReddit. Scroll down until you find Filter by Flair

  3. Add the flairs you don't want to see anymore.

Redesign Users

Desktop users using the redesign can Click on flair to filter from the sidebar. Note that this will only show that specific flair. If you want to view the front page with one or more flairs missing, follow the guide in the next section.

Mobile Web & Desktop users can filter using the search function.

Type -flair:FLAIRNAME in the search box. This also works on the re-design for desktop.

Or bookmark this link, amended to whichever your preference is, currently set to sex/NSFW questions: https://www.reddit.com/r/TooAfraidToAsk/search?q=-flair%3Asex%2FNSFW&restrict_sr=on&sort=top&t=day

You can add more filters by writing -flair:FLAIRHERE, -flair:FLAIRHERE etc. This also works on the re-design for desktop, however you'll have to manually sort by "top" and "last 24 hours" every time you add a new flair to the list.

This will show you the front page as it exists without the posts that have the flairs you specify.

Mobile

Reddit (Official)

  1. Search in the search bar at the top of the app the subreddit you want to view, then select it.

  2. After you've landed on that sub, tap the search bar again. When you do a list of popular flairs will appear

  3. Tapping any of them will show you the posts that have that flair, you will want to sort by new to find the newest things however.

  4. If you want to see the entire flair list, go back to step 2 and tap "See More".

You cannot flair filter properly with this app and it's considerably slower than others, so I'd recommend picking one of the ones below.

RedditIsFun

Check first if you have Link Flair enabled. If you have Link Flair enabled, skip steps 2 and 3.

  1. Tap the 3 dots in the top right and go down to Settings

  2. Scroll down and open Appearance

  3. Scroll around 3 quarters of the way down and enable the Link Flair options

  4. Return to Settings and go to Content Filters.

  5. Tap "Post Filters", then select the + in the top right. Select which subreddit you'd like to filter from and by flair, then add the flairs name.

Baconreader

  1. Tap the 3 horizontal lines in the top left and go down to Settings

  2. Tap Filters

  3. Go to Link Flair Blacklist

  4. Write whatever you'd like to filter in and add it as a filter.

This app will filter indicated flairs across all subreddits, not just specific ones.

Sync for Reddit

  1. Tap the 3 horizontal lines in the top left.

  2. Go down to Settings

  3. Scroll down a ways to Filters

  4. Select "Flair Filters" and add the flair you want to filter.

This app will filter indicated flairs across all subreddits, not just specific ones.

Boost for Reddit

  1. Tap the 3 horizontal lines in the top left.

  2. Go down to Settings

  3. Tap Content Filters

  4. Tap Flairs and write what you want to filter

This app will filter indicated flairs across all subreddits, not just specific ones.

Slide for Reddit

  1. Tap the 3 horizontal lines in the top left.

  2. Go down to Settings

  3. Scroll down to Content, and then Filters

  4. At the bottom, Flair Filters

  5. Write filters as SUBREDDITNAME:FLAIR, save. It will appear as this.

Joey for Reddit

  1. Tap the 3 horizontal lines in the top left

  2. Go down to Settings

  3. Scroll down to Filters

  4. Select Flair Filter

  5. Add the flairs you want to filter

This app will filter indicated flairs across all subreddits, not just specific ones.

Infinity

  1. Tap the 3 horizontal lines in the top left.

  2. Go to settings

  3. Tap through to Post Filter

  4. Tap the + sign in the lower right to begin creating your filter.

  5. Customize the filter as necessary, though this is the relevant bit for this guide

  6. Save in the top right, then tap the newly saved filter and select 'apply to'

  7. Apply your filter to the where you want it placed

Logged out Users (Desktop)

Some people can't log into Reddit but still browse and want to filter. You can do this most effectively on old Reddit as new Reddit will change your sorting preferences anytime you add a new flair to filter. Using this filtering system, you will see all relevant posts for the last 24 hours, effectively showing you the front page as it exists without whatever you're filtering.

You can do this by going to https://old.reddit.com/r/TooAfraidToAsk/search?q=&restrict_sr=on&sort=relevance&t=day

Once there, write -flair:FLAIRNAME, -flair:FLAIRNAME, -flair:FLAIRNAMEand so on. Make use of the block quotes in the flair list above so that flairs with spaces in them filter properly.

Apollo pro+ for iOS

  1. Tap the Settings button in the bottom right

  2. Tap Add Keyword

  3. Add the flairs you wish to filter

Other iOS hardware -> WIP

Apps that do not support Flair Filtering

Some mobile apps support some level of filtering but not Flair Filtering. These are:

  • Now for Reddit
  • Red Reader (can't filter anything)
  • Relay

Mental Health Is it common for younger people to pretend to have mental illnesses?

Upvotes

During the pandemic, I went from one of the youngest at my job to one of the oldest. All of the old guard cashed out and retired early and we had to hire like crazy. Mostly people in their early to mid 20s. Over the last year and a half, I've noticed that they talk about mental health A LOT. It's literally all they ever talk about in their free time and during lunch. All of them have shared and talk about their own mental illnesseses with each other. ADHD, OCD, Bi-polar, Depression, etc...

Statistically seems really improbable for all 9 of these guys and girls to all suffer from these issues, but idk are mental illnesses really this common now?

Other Is this normal? NSFW

2.9k Upvotes

I(18,f) am currently living with my parents. Around 1 year ago, I put my clothes in washing machine but I forgot separate my underwear from my pants. Then my parents proceeded to send a picture of that to the group chat of our family and shamed me for not separating that. The thing is, this never happened ever until that day so I was very taken a back. Obviously my undergarments are very personal to me so this just made me feel....violated ig?? But I thought this was normal and moved past.

Another incident I can recall is that how my bra was showing through in one of the official pictures for my school. It was not even really visible but very slightly. My parents called it out in the group chat and again I never was treated this way so I was really surprised.

Another thing they do is peeing with the door open. Idk why they do this since they are very much capable of locking the door. If I do that you bet I will get my ass beaten.

My mom keeps smacking my ass even though I don't consent to this. I tried setting boundaries but it's not working.

Am I going insane or is this normal?

Edit: tysm for the upvotes. I had no idea that it would be this big. I will be honest. I didn't realise how unhinged my family was. Literally everyone of you told me that it's a very creepy thing to do. So ty for pointing that out. Also I gained like 8 followers during this. Ty ig??? Lol I tried really hard to keep with everyone but the number of responses is just overwhelming so I am sorry I didn't read every comment.

Other Should I be so angry when I’m so young?

Hey. I’m 19, and I’ve been pretty much pissed off for a few years now. I just get so angry when I hear about the shit politicians, ceberities, news reporters - grown ass adults - do. I’m pissed we have a no-experience, “I earned my way and by earned my way I mean daddy paid for everything”, reality tv star as our president. Oh, and as a bonus, he sexually assaults people. What in the fuck? And these fucking reporters. Don’t even give a rats ass that Roy Moore is a pedophile. These stupid parents with their stupid dotting and obvious attempts at fame through exploitation of their own children. I’m furious. I just have so much emotion, negative emotion, I feel like destroying houses with my own two fists almost daily and I don’t know if it’s normal to be so angry at injustice, at dishonesty, at all the things these adults - adults that taught me morals when I was a child, morals they don’t follow - are doing. I feel a bonfire burning in my chest and I’m just further infuriated by the fact no one can hear me when I tweet everything I feel. My emotions mean nothing and it’s just another thing that makes me angry.

In every single gym locker room I've been to there always old guys just letting it hang, not giving a damn, they are everywhere and every guy knows about this but I've never heard a woman say it about the women's locker room, so does it happen too there?

Sex/NSFW How do I go about it? NSFW

I (26m) have had the hots for this older lady since I could get my first woody. I even saved her number In my phone as blank milf and showed her. Anyways years pass we end up not talking and I saw her about a year ago at the gas station. It was her birthday yesterday (47 and still looking so damn good). I wanna make her a nice dinner and completely fuck her brains out and check it off my bucket list.

My question is how do I go about asking for sex? Do I be upfront with her and tell her? Or invite her over for dinner and maybe some wine and ease into it?

Other Is it common to be kind of depressed after finishing a series/tv show?

2.1k Upvotes

I feel like I get too attached when watching shows on Netflix.

This happened a while back with The Office (I’ve since gotten over it and could care less for it) but has recently stricken up with Stranger Things since I just finished season 2 and finished all 7 episodes of Beyond Stranger Things.

I always get really engaged and too attached to the characters and probably spend too long watching interviews, bloopers, outtakes, or just random videos of the stars since I don’t want to let go.

I feel like it’s stupid but, is it normal?

Current Events How can the US government block a strike?

Why wouldn't railroad workers strike anyways? Does the U.S. government have a plan to make people go back to work at the railroad?

edit: I don't want to argue about the effects of unions or what could happen. I simply want to know what the government is threatening to do if the union strikes anyways.

Mental Health How has a lack of physical affection affected your mental health?

I was wondering if anyone else has had experiences where their partner is not very physically affectionate with them. I am in a relationship where my partner rarely touches me or shows physical affection, and it has started to affect my mental health. I feel like I am not important or loved, and it is causing me a lot of stress and sadness.

I know that every relationship is different, and everyone has different levels of physical affection that they are comfortable with. But for me, this lack of physical affection is really hard to deal with. I have tried talking to my partner about it, but they don't seem to understand how important it is to me.

I am curious to know if anyone else has experienced this, and how they have dealt with it. Is it normal for men's partners to be very physical with them, or am I the only one dealing with this? Any advice or support would be greatly appreciated.

Culture & Society Do I need to drop my teenage vocab now that I've been an adult for awhile?

Upvotes

I say "bruh" and curse words a lot in casual conversation. But I carry that over to my conversations with my coworkers (non-salaried job) and use it a lot with my colleagues (I am in an MA program). Some of my coworkers and colleagues are twenty years my senior, and I find that they make me feel comfortable enough to say stuff like "Bruh" but I was wondering if maybe I should stop now that I'm more in an adult sphere.

I’ve never understood this.

I’m not trying to be ignorant or anything but isn’t a country just a place to live? Why do people get so attached and emotionally, physically, and mentally invested in to it?

I’ve lived in two countries for 10+ years each and I’ve never been attached to either of them. Is it just personal preference or am I missing something?

It's come to my attention in recent years that I might be the female equivalent of a creepy uncle. So I wanna know:

What are some things that girls do that is socially acceptable because of gender roles but that people might find creepy or out of place?

Like having pictures of half-naked guys on your walls or being insistent after a guy says no.

I'm aware I'm being hetero-normative here. I'm sorry.

I'm not looking for a political debate. I just want candid answers.

Habits & Lifestyle Why don't some women shave?

Upvotes

JUST ASKING not as a judgement statement but to get personal reasons why? Sometimes I don't shave because I'm too lazy to or just don't feel like it, but that doesn't last for long. Why? Well, because I like how smooth my skin feels after and it's less itchy when I wear leggings. Mostly for hygienic purposes regarding underarms (I workout often and I cannot stand that post-workout smell/sweat with armpit hair). If you don't shave/do hair removal (like, at all), what are your reasons? I'm curious!

God this sounds so offensive but I'm curious. Dog breeds have differences notable enough to be categorized, why do we just use 'race' for humans? Are we not technically different breeds or do we just separate ourselves from animals by using the word race?

Politics Why do people that think Republicans are gonna take away all their rights tend to not own guns?

Upvotes

I mean, if you think Republicans are trying to establish some sort of fascist dictatorship, shouldn't you own guns and advocate for other people on your side to own guns? So it's always struck me as strange how many people on the left, particularly the ones that are afraid of conservatives taking away their rights, don't own them and are even against gun ownership.
