I'll leave this here

Mace and pepper spray are two DIFFERENT self defense products:

Traditional chemical mace (CN) is classified as an irritant and is similar to tear gas.

Pepper spray is classified as an inflammatory agent and will immediately incapacitate an assailant.

Chemical mace (CN, CS) may not affect on criminals under the influence
of drugs or alcohol. However, pepper spray will take down and cause
temporary pain to those under the influence.

Unlike pepper spray, chemical mace WILL
NOT cause inflammation of the capillaries of the eyes and skin causing
temporary blindness, nausea, breathing difficulties and an intense
burning sensation.

Today "Mace" is most accurately
described as brand name associated with self defense products (Mace ®
Brand), including pepper spray.

I've been hit by more riot control stuff than I should, honestly, and pepper spray/pepperballs are by far the worst. Like, tear gas/OC is bad, and impact munitions can hurt like shit, but nothing, nothing is worse than not being able to take a full breath while every hole on your face burns and your tears and spit and snot flow like rivers. And the way it sticks to your clothes, too; you'll be doing laundry and then suddenly you're retching and tearing up again.

45

u/aFacelessBlankName Aug 17 '22

Agreed. I had to do tear gas for basic training which you can just walk off. Pepper spray does not stop and it's so much worse.

26

u/Xalterai Aug 17 '22

The only way to even clean pepper spray off is keep your eyes closed, hose your face down, and pray it wears off within the next few hours, then burn the clothes you were wearing

Pepper spray is by far the best self-defense tool if you are not able to use a firearm.

Idiots, including myself as a teenager, think that a knife is fine, but it really isn't. Knives are terrible for self-defense and should realistically only be used as a last resort. It can be better than nothing, but it can also escalate the situation and do more harm than good.

There a hundred reasons you could list on why knives are bad self-defense tools, including escalation and the fact that they are very close range weapons that are way harder to use without proper training than many people think, but my favorite adage about them is:

"The loser of a knife fight dies on the pavement, the winner gets to die in an ambulance."

For real though, pepper spray is extremely incapacitating. Compared to virtually all other options other than firearms it is your best bet in a self-defense situation.

It's ridiculous that many countries ban it and prevent people from carrying it. Charge the small amount of fucking idiots that use it out of malice and let the law-abiding have it for their personal safety. Women are completely fucked if men attack them in countries like that, they have no equalizer and have to just hope for the best.

Despite all our flaws I am at least thankful the US recognizes the basic right of self-defense.* Too many countries treat their citizens defending themselves like they are children at a school with a zero-tolerance policy.

*In some states/cities your results may vary.

117

u/f7f7z Aug 17 '22

Of all the shit Johnny Knoxville has put his body through, he said pepper spray is the best self defense weapon.

52

u/oldcarfreddy Aug 17 '22

I'll believe him considering he got rubber ball claymore-ed and brushed it off

44

u/structured_anarchist Aug 17 '22

He didn't exactly brush that off. In the outtakes from that stunt, he was howling with pain for a good half an hour and had one of the nastiest looking bruises. He took a single rubber ball to the side of his abdomen and it doubled him over. The guy next to him got it worse. He took three direct hits in the torso and crumpled instantly. Knoxville at least tried to turn sideways when it went off and only took one hit between his pants and the body armor he was wearing.

20

u/ScratchinWarlok Aug 17 '22

Heres the clip

It was bam and dunn next to him, and it was more than 3 direct hits.

Also if you have a knife and a bigger, committed opponent attacks you, now it's THEIR knife. The same rule applies basically to any weapon that doesn't work fucking immediately (like pepper spray).

224

u/oblik Aug 17 '22

Not to mention it escalates the conflict. Drunk fratboy will go from "let's fight bro" to "oh fuck this guy is trying to stab me".

Mace is different. It's an escape tool.

The video in the mall from a month back that went viral shows how well a knife can work. It doesn't always obviously. The guy charged him, then the victim stabbed him once right in the throat. He was dead in 20 seconds.

50

u/insanitybit Aug 17 '22

That video is the perfect situation for pepper spray, you had a group of people with multiple feet of distance. Pepper spray would have ended the conflict way faster and no one would have died.

10

u/Rho-aiaser Aug 17 '22

Yeah, I am definitely with you on this; that video seems less like an advertisement for a knife and more like one for a pepperspray.

u/fondots Aug 17 '22

People are fucking stupid. Iwork in a 911 dispatch center, took a call one time from a dude who was following a group of kids who had threatened him with a knife while they were on the bus.

Dimb-dumb not only got off at the same stop as them, but kept following them. I told him to stop following them, because they had knives and we didn't want anyone to get hurt.

His response? "It's ok, i have a knife too"

Yeah, i don't want you stabbing them either dipshit. They're walking away, let them walk away.

Also since the top post here is about pepper spray, i have a pepper spray story as well. Some sort of domestic, my caller was in the house with their family, their ex was outside on the porch, and they're arguing and fighting through the open front door. I tell my caller to stay inside, close and lock the door, and not to talk to the person outside, just wait inside for the police. Ideally that should have been the end of it, but a couple minutes later they're calling back requesting an ambulance because they got pepper sprayed by the ex.

Now either i have vastly underestimated the force pepper spray comes out at and the spray punched a hole through their door like a water jet cutter, or they did exactly the thing i told them not to do and opened the door to keep arguing and fighting like a dumbass.

I've had entirely too many callers saying that there's someone with a gun or knife on their porch who i have to tell to stay inside and not to go out and fight them.

7

u/UsaiyanBolt Aug 18 '22

Yeah, it looked like a quick punch and then the dude is just suddenly gushing blood from his throat. I didn't even notice it happen at first.

Another thing to consider is how easy it is to fall over and crack your head open from just a light shove. Avoid street fights, people die that way all the time.

That video is the perfect example for why knives are terrible for self defense. Now someone is dead over a needless escalation, probably provoked by the fact that someone even drew a knive.

Wouldn't surprise me if the knive-wielder gets manslaughter charge for that one. He had the ability to leave and instead advanced on the other guys again with a deadly weapon.

But on the flip side that’s also why knives are bad, you have to get too close to someone to use them. And most of the time the don’t stop someone until after the fight when the adrenaline wears of and the wounds then start to hurt..

I forget what country this was, but there is somewhere where if you want to buy pepper spray you have to agree to get hit by it first, just so you can understand how much it hurts and hopefully use it responsibly, also probably to stop dumb people that wanna buy it for stupid reasons.

267

u/FlashpointJ24 Aug 17 '22 edited Aug 17 '22

Some US police departments have that policy for non-lethal weapons. If you're going to carry pepper spray or a taser, you have to experience it first. That way, if it ever gets wrestled away from you, you know what to expect. And maybe the experience will make you less likely to resort to using it, if you know how painful it can be.

One of my brother's good friends is a police officer, and he had to be sprayed with pepper spray and hit with a taser before he was allowed to carry either of them. Their reasoning is that if someone grabs it and uses it on you, then at least you know how it will feel, and you can be somewhat prepared.

I have a cousin in the Air Force and he said part of basic training is you put on a gas mask and go into a chamber filled with...I don't remember what he said it was. Probably not anything crazy like chlorine or mustard gas. Maybe it was tear gas? Anyway he said they put you in the chamber so you can see how well the gas masks work, and then step 2 of the training is take off the mask and see how it feels to get gassed.

64

Always remember the cardinal rule of Knifefighting that I was taught in the Army:

"Rule 1: Don't get into a knife fight."

Edit: And technically rule 2: "If you have to get into a knife fight, you are going to get cut."

17

u/The-real-ryan-s Aug 17 '22

Yes, rule 1 of knife fighting is you’re gonna get cut

5

u/things_U_choose_2_b Aug 17 '22

I live in a country where it's considered an offensive weapon (UK). Pretty much anything can be considered an offensive weapon if carried for the purpose of violence. Knuckledusters, mace, tasers, a candlestick holder, a sock full of change, all offensive weapons. Further, iirc mace gives the same legal charges as a fucking GUN.

Yes some people would abuse mace. But it's an 'offensive weapon' that can be used by untrained people, rarely causes permanent damage and would give many people a higher measure of security than our pathetic police force provides.

Been sprayed numerous times for training. Pepper spray is really about panic and pain. If you can deal with the pain and not panic you are fine which is why they spray you when they certify you. The not being able to see is just your eyes wanting to close and all the mucous that it produces.

You can see if you try and open your eyes. When I was sprayed last time they made us hold our eyes open and sprayed directly into our eye balls then we had to fight 2 people and handcuff someone. So we had to be able to see and fight through it. Pepper spray is very effective though especially to those never exposed as it creates a panic and pain that truly does suck.

I had police officer pepper spray a guy inside the back of my ambulance years ago. Me, the patient, her partner and the Sargent all wanted to have "words with her". We had to call another ambulance and leave that one sit with all the doors open while multiple cops and a medic sat on the sidewalk coughing up pepper snot and washing our eyes with all the sterile water on the truck. Then the nice old lady that lived there gave us a hose from her house and the corner store guy brought us some gallons of milk. I never saw that office riding without a training officer again, then she was gone (rumored to have been hired by the highway patrol).

Tldr; pepper spray is great but there is often collateral damage. Tasers are more "person specific".

Years ago I was in a club watching a band and some guy in the crowd got into it with a bouncer. When the other bouncers came over to help, the guy maced them. They had to stop the show and clear out the entire venue. I was about 30’ away and was basically half blind and crying for twenty minutes. That stuff is ridiculous when sprayed indoors

Here's a very important fact about Bear Spray/Bear Mace: it is far weaker than regular pepper spray. On average best spray only contains 2 percent capsaicin where as pepper spray designed for use against humans on average contains 12-15 percent. Bears and other animals are have a far better sense of smell and more sensitive noses than us humans so they require less pepper to cause the painful affect. If you're looking to defend yourself against humans get regular pepper spray. Please pass the knowledge along

I bought coyote spray because I frequently walk my dogs at dusk/in the morning. It’s just mace but can be used to break up dog fights and apparently fend off coyotes (the ones in our area are getting bold).

I wanted to make sure it worked (and that I understood how far it sprayed etc) so I went to an open field, made sure I was spraying with the wind, held it up arm’s length and at eye level (I wanted to get some distance), pointing away from me.

I slightly maced myself. I don’t know how powerful coyote mace is (“normal” mace is illegal here) but I didn’t get to see how it sprayed because I immediately stopped functioning.

Only a few drops hit my eyes, and I know this because I felt each individual one hit my eyeball I swear, but the burning was completely overwhelming.

I had to call my mom to come pick me up lol.

But yeah, mace seems like a double edged sword that doesn’t discriminate. Also, fuck anyone that thinks using mace is a prank. I can’t imagine what an actual eyeful would feel like, anyone who uses it because they think it’s funny should be waterboarded with mace.

A few years ago, around 2am a small fight broke out in a pizza shop I was in. The cops (probably 6) standing outside saw, one simply opened the door and sprayed. EVERYONE was hurting, even the workers. Kept making me want to puke.

Why was that guy so upset for a phone filming the bloody street?

922

u/LordEdgeward_TheTurd Aug 17 '22

Gets a nice car because he wants attention, gets attention and freaks out... turns into gumby.

146

u/Chance5e Aug 17 '22

Why did he stop in the middle of the road? This isn’t an intersection, anyone else would have kept driving.

99

u/Qetuowryipzcbmxvn Aug 17 '22

He was hoping his wildest fantasies would play out. He would face the injustice against him and knock the villain out with one clean hit. The guy wasn't intimidated by him, so that scared him off enough not to attack him, but at least get some satisfaction by breaking the man's camera, which should've only taken a second. He didn't succeed there, so he was confused trying to think of what would happen next, probably would've cussed him out as he got in as car and drove away. Unfortunately he still presented himself as a threat, because he didn't want to reveal how much of a coward he really was, so of course the cameraman did what he could to neutralize the threat.

That’s the whole point, instigate people into being angry and then suing if they “violate their rights”. It’s amazing there are people this stunted mentally to do this as a day job.

What absolute fucking knobs. I am 100% in favor of filming the police, and I am 100% in favor of people being able to film freely in public...

But to go out there and just deliberately do everything that you possibly can to piss off and annoy everyday people going about their lives and try to goad them into a confrontation... like how fucking sad is your life that you're going to spend your days doing that. Regardless of the fact that they are carefully walking the line to make sure they are legally in the right, they are still absolutely pathetic pieces of shit.

Didn't think I'd find myself wishing that the guy who got pepper-sprayed managed to connect with camera-guy.

135

u/Kilen13 Aug 17 '22

Perfect encapsulation of "you're not wrong, you're just an asshole". They have the legal right to do what they're doing, but still massive dickheads for how they go about it.

There is someone who does this in my city. My local city-run community center has an after-school program for kids in their gymnasium, which has a walking/running track above it. The guy kept coming in with his camera, going up to the track and filming. Understandably, people had an issue with an adult filming children like this, but evidently the lawyers said they couldn't stop him because it's a public facility open to anyone. Their solution was just to close the track for everyone from 3 to 6 during the after-school program.

I get the instinct of wanting to enforce your rights, and I genuinely don't think the guy had any lascivious interest in filming there -- it just happened to be the place he could do it that got a lot of attention and backlash. But I definitely think it's examples of "use some common sense" and "this is why we can't have nice things".

Yeah, these guys are assholes. It might be their right to film, but they’re still assholes.

Apparently, they film enough folks and hope to get lucky with someone getting irate. Then, they pull out the pepper spray, spray the irate person while filming and make money selling the videos.

If they’d stick to filming law enforcement and keeping them in check, it’d be fine. But they are knowingly instigating folks to get a reaction so they can react with mace and sell their vids.

Fuck these guys.
