FYI, the 360 version is BC with XBox One and is $20. You just need to buy it from xbox.com

not sure why it isn't in the XBone's built in market place.

207

u/madmilton49 Sep 25 '22

That's been the standard shortening for the Xbox One since launch.

What's really upsetting is that people call the Xbox Series X just Series X Instead of the VASTLY superior SeXbox.

I spent SO much time playing Orange Box. It was my favorite thing to do on rainy days. Pb&j sandwich, cup of coffee, and my Xbox 360 elite.. perfection.

54

u/KaeptnKaese Sep 24 '22

The orange box + HL2 Deathmatch was all my steam account consisted of for about the first 3 years and it was enough.

26

u/Hipstershy Sep 24 '22

Same! When I bought Audiosurf it felt so weird to have a non-Valve game on Steam.

...and then I never really played it but now I have literal hundreds of non-Valve Steam games

13

u/MightyMetricBatman Sep 25 '22

I played a ton of Audiosurf, was never any good at it. I literally have no idea how many hours because this was before Valve added time tracking to Stream.

Also, Audiosurf on the Zune HD was great too for such a little mp3 player at the time.

Tried playing the co-op portal 2 with an ex. She could not understand how portals worked, they just didn't make sense to her brain. Even after helping her through the first 3-4 levels, she still had literally no clue how they worked, and got so fed up she rage quit. It was the only video game I ever attempted to play with her. I decided it wasn't worth the stress to try to teach her a different game.

The very best people to play Portal 2 co-op with is someone slightly dumber than you so that you can feel super smart when you figure things out just before they do, but not so dumb that you can't get them to help you in the ways they need to.

5

u/PoignantOpinionsOnly Sep 25 '22

I was going to say that having someone else genuinely enjoying the experience and legitimately trying to win is what makes it fun. Like, they realize we're supposed to cooperate unlike fighting games and will trust you enough to at least try.

21

u/Evilsj Sep 25 '22

I promise you you're not. I don't know exactly where my feelings fall as go which I like better, but I've seen plenty of sentiment that the first one is the PERFECT length and that the 2nd one actually out stays its welcome a bit.

14

u/meno123 Sep 25 '22

My problem with portal 2 was the actual test solving. It felt like the majority of the game were tests that had a single gimmick that you had to maneuver to get through. There's nothing wrong with that, but it felt like you generally got a few tutorial tests for each mechanic, then were whisked off to another set of tutorial tests for a new mechanic. I haven't done co-op or any community content, but it generally felt like the game never got past the "check out this new mechanic" phase.

7

u/Ember_Rising Sep 25 '22

This plus the comedy is dialed up. Portal 1’s story is pretty dark and the whole facility is bleak, empty, brutal, and cold. Closer to the atmosphere of Half Life. Portal 2 is dark comedy, where every character gets a punchline and the facility is more alive and has some personality. I don’t think it’s wrong either way, but I think I personally enjoyed the atmosphere of 1 a tiny bit more.

The first game is great. The second is a masterpiece and in every way the greatest sequel to anything ever.

86

u/Bunktavious Sep 24 '22

This may not be a popular opinion, I don't know - but I think the tighter game play of Portal 1 was actually better. Portal 2 wins hands down on the extras and lore though.

7

u/LvS Sep 25 '22

There's a video of someone explaining why they think Portal is better than Portal 2. Does that match your opinion?

Fwiw, I agree with the reasoning, but disagree with the conclusion.

I know a guy who also thinks Portal 1 was perfect and second part ruined it to be commercially pleasing. I find portal 1 to be literally just a tech demo though, while replaying Portal 2 for like 5 or 6 times.

21

u/landragoran Sep 25 '22 edited Sep 25 '22

Portal was a lightbulb moment for me. "Oh wow, I didn't know games could be like that." - that kinda thing. The feeling you get when you finish a really good movie and you're not sure what emotion to process first.

And then sitting there after the final fight you hear

This was a triumph

Don't get me wrong, Portal 2 is a fantastic game, but Portal was something special. It was this tight, short burst of narrative via gameplay and a masterclass on "Show, don't tell", with a revolutionary core mechanic and littered with rewards for finding clever ways to use said mechanic. And it was clever as hell.

Portal 2 probably was about as good as a sequel could have hoped to be, though.

41

u/ThePaSch Sep 25 '22 Take My Energy

I find portal 1 to be literally just a tech demo though, while replaying Portal 2 for like 5 or 6 times.

I find Portal 2's single player to be essentially a sightseeing tour. The puzzles were kind of disappointing through and through - far too many chambers devolved into a simple "find the white surfaces among the sea of black and fire portals at them to win". It seemed far more interested in telling a story and showing off bombastic environments than providing actual difficult puzzles.

The co-op is the best shit ever, though. Filled with brainteasers and a complete delight to play through and through. Without it, I'd probably also think Portal 1 is just the tighter and more focused experience, but playing through the co-op for the first time was just the best gaming experience I've ever had, so that gets all the points from me.

One of the best games made in my personal top 5

u/LarryCrabCake Sep 25 '22

Portal 1 and 2 share the spot for my top 1 game(s) of all time.

They perfectly accomplish what they're trying to be, and almost anyone can have a blast playing them.

Please peel the plastic off the bezel of your TV...

43

u/SeniorAdissimo Sep 25 '22

Dear Lord, I think the plastic extends out onto the screen. Idk how you don't immediately peel that off.

u/shinobi500 Sep 24 '22

Surely it will take him longer than that.

69

u/Gr8NonSequitur Sep 24 '22

about ... 4? The whole game can be played in 4-5 hours if you aren't trying to speed rush it.

u/Axle_65 Sep 25 '22

Ya I’m a slow gamer. Always taking my time with things and enjoying the little details. Even at that I beat portal 1 in like 3 1/2 hour-ish. So glad I played it after 2 was out so I had more bites of this tasty treat of a game. Both 1 AND 2 are such great titles. Here’s hoping we one day finally get a 3.

Just best it with my wife yesterday. Took us 1h59min to reach the credits. It was her first playthrough, and while I helped out in a few puzzles, it was strictly motor skill-related. I didn't feed her any strategies or answers, just did some skillful platforming and shooting here and there. This game is way shorter than people remember.

Almost definitely. I've had portal for about 13 years now and my best start to finish playthrough is about an hour and a bit. I'm so b jealous though, I wish I could play both of them again for the first time

Portal 2 is the only game I would give an unambiguous 10/10. Just perfection, all-around.

Don’t even care what game, getting a quiet house with pizza and Xbox gets to be more of a fabled treasure as you get older.

Funny thing, around 12 years ago I pirated this game and then added a shortcut to the .exe file in my Steam library. Some time later, I download Steam on a different computer and I realize that Steam now thinks I own the game so it was available to download. It’s still there and to this day I have got no idea how the hell that happened…

5

u/UnrealKazu Sep 25 '22

I think over the years Valve has gifted the game on multiple occasions to all Steam users who didn't have it. So it's probably from one of those gift sessions.
