It’s a mimic!

484

u/OnePageMage Sep 24 '22

"With your passive perception, you notice the picture frame has an eyeball embedded in it, watching you."

"It's a mimic! I draw my sword."

"So do you stab the frame?"

"Are we rolling initiative?"

"Not at the moment; I need to know what you do."

"Oh hell yeah - I stab it!"

"Okay, that triggers the trap... Everyone give me a Wisdom saving throw!"

"DAMNIT ARTIMIR!!"

7

u/whatsevvver Sep 25 '22

What is this?

58

u/oosuteraria-jin Sep 25 '22

A ritual of beholding. Endless watcher, turn your gaze on this wretched thing.

3

used to live in an old Victorian. went under the house and put a bunch of eyes where the knot holes in the flooring were before putting down carpet. wonder if anyone ever got to see them. thanks for reminding me of that.

1.1k

u/artie_pdx Sep 24 '22

That’s some delightfully devilish shit.

663

u/pseudocultist Sep 24 '22

Part of owning an old house is definitely fucking with people 80 years from now. Eyeballs in knotholes is great I’m gonna use that.

278

u/Duskuke Sep 24 '22

if anyone is seriously thinking of doing this: eyes made for taxidermy can be bought online and are very realistic

56

u/teacher_comp Sep 24 '22

Or buy plastic skeletons. It will look real after a few years of dust.

130

u/shoe-veneer Sep 24 '22

Eh, disagree there, plastic vs bone is pretty obvious to anyone with even a little experience butchering/ cooking. Best to just use the real thing.

55

u/no_modest_bear Sep 25 '22

Hol' up

7

u/Lord-Phorse Sep 25 '22

Plenty of animal bones look human to the untrained eye

3

u/KarmicFedex Sep 25 '22

Fun fact, the first dinosaur bone fossil ever discovered was by Robert Plot in 1677. He thought it looked similar to a human femur, and therefore concluded that there must have been a species of giant man.

What kind of eyes? Googly eyes? Glass marble eyes? Or actual eyes from a dissected human cadaver?

216

u/iCryKarma Sep 24 '22

In the 90s I went to get a small toy from those 25 cent dispensers and a little squishy eyeball came out. It absolutely looked and felt like a human eyeball and nothing remotely similar should have came from the dispenser. I was very young and it freaked me out so much I was scared to tell anyone. Your comment reminded me of it after all these years

37

u/genub Sep 24 '22

Funny enough I had a real human eyeball at my work station yesterday (work in a pathology lab)

20

u/Impressive_Driver_90 Sep 25 '22

6

u/FUCKTWENTYCHARACTERS Sep 24 '22 edited Sep 25 '22

Fun fact, eye balls are quite firm and not squishy at all. In fact they can be a little tough to slice open.

Edit: the squish when you poke your eye is mostly from the suspensory ligaments and adipose tissue which serve to hold/cushion the eyeball. If you were to try and pinch the eye it actually feels kinda hard.

12

u/Schooner37 Sep 24 '22

How do you know what a human eyeball feels like?

52

u/slowy Sep 24 '22

You probably have two right in your own face you can poke if you want

33

u/Van_GOOOOOUGH Sep 24 '22

In fifth grade science class we all dissected cow eyeballs. It feels like the firmness of a grape with the texture & rubberiness of a peeled hard boiled egg.

When I die, I want to be walled up in the basement of my house, then have the house sold and not tell anyone I’m there. Little surprise for them when they renovate.

30

u/im_just_thinking Sep 24 '22 edited Sep 25 '22

This would have been great to leave in this old middle school turned into a hotel that I stayed at last summer! The place was bizarre. There was a gym and the rooms were very strange with random empty closets and dark hallways with endless overheads. One room upstairs had a secluded spiral staircase and another had 4 beds lol.

Edit: by overhead I mean a gap between the ceiling and the walls, idk what the purpose of it was but it was just a space that ended into the darkness lol in the upstairs hallway. Oh, and there was stuff like a full size knight armor and trophies, etc.

36

u/Penyrolewen1970 Sep 24 '22

I went to a party in the late 80s. I was a punk and this party was being held in a house inhabited by a bunch of “original” punks from the 70s, so a decade or so older than me. I was in my late teens and this felt pretty hardcore and grown-up, none of your teenage party shit. I was tripping on about 200 mushrooms and finding things a bit intense downstairs - very loud punk music, moshing etc. I went upstairs.

One bedroom was completely empty apart from a naked girl with a Mohican, asleep in the middle of the floor.

I went to the attic room. It had sloping ceilings, as many attic rooms do. There was a chair attached to one ceiling surface (glue? Nails? I don’t know), a carriage clock to another. There was a wardrobe lying on its side, about 20 phone books (remember them?) and hundreds of half pence coins all over the floor.

That was a weird night.

13

u/airyfairyfarts Sep 24 '22

Sounds like an amazing night. Sometimes when I try to untangle what I saw/experienced on a trip the next day I realize it was just that weird, psychedelics or not.

29

u/rodentfacedisorder Sep 24 '22

What's a mimic?

110

u/QuotableRaven Sep 24 '22

A mimic is a shape shifting monster most offen in dnd or other role playing games, though sometimes I video games as well. They take the form of an inanimate object and try to eat the player when they get too close. The most common appearance in pop culture is a chest, which has eyes and teeth when alerted.

13

u/sup3rdr01d Sep 24 '22

Mimic chest in dark souls!

3

u/Trips_On_BananaPeels Sep 25 '22
