You mean like Matt Gaetz?

Still a dangerous situation. When deranged individuals get ignored, they turn into school shooters etc. So someone with access to a nuclear arsenal shouldn't necessarily be laughed off.

If Iran did this, then the US, Israel, and Saudi Arabia would see an imminent need for war even if Iran was bluffing.

35

u/SmileFIN Sep 09 '22

I think there is a China sized difference between NK and Iran

5

u/Solid_Hunter_4188 Sep 09 '22

At the risk of sounding propagandist, Do you think that our intelligence has any real fear of China, militarily? Economic shockwaves if war is initiated, sure, but think about military conflict for a second:

The United States is not only the best funded, maintained, and globally situated by more than triple the next in line, but they also have the most robust and PROVEN war machine. To my knowledge, it’s the only world power with active combat for the last 30’straight years, refining modern strategy and testing systems actively.

China is not to be expected to be pushovers, but our generals have actually directed successful and sustained action, China has not. Our military has modernized Allies, China does not. Our systems have been proven against modern enemies (Russia by Ukrainian proxy), China does not. We have allies on china’s doorstep. China has none on ours (unless you count Russia facing Alaska, in which case “lol”).

Much as we can shit on our bloat, or our waste, or our smack-talk, it can be backed up. There’s a reason China had to just take it in the ass while we send diplomats to Taiwan as a separate nation.

1

u/HotTopicRebel Sep 10 '22

China doesn't have to emerge from the war victorious for us to lose. A war would cause a depression worse than even 1929 because of how intricately the world economies are tied.

2

u/NathanExplosion6six6 Sep 09 '22

Stirring the wok with one extra spicy eggroll cause very rich old lady dead now

64

u/nucflashevent Sep 09 '22

Excellent.

Now that means any war with another nuclear weapons state means they would be completely justified in executing a "launch on warning".

29

u/despitegirls Sep 09 '22 edited Sep 09 '22

If they launched nuclear weapons, sure. Conventional weapons would require a response, and frankly that's the kind of scenario I think is more likely and more drawn out.

Edit: Was not aware that we can't determine nuclear versus conventional weapons in flight.

26

u/phriot Sep 09 '22

I think the other commenter was making the point that, now, if they launch any ballistic missile, we don't know what kind of warhead is on it. Could be conventional, could be a nuke. As we can't know, another country launching nuclear warheads at them while theirs have yet to impact is a justified response.

11

u/greyjungle Sep 09 '22

Justified? Seems more like jumping on board the “who can kill the most human civilians” game.

18

u/phriot Sep 09 '22

It's part of the reason MAD exists as a deterrent. Now North Korea can't really launch any ballistic missiles at other countries. If they do, they'll probably get nuked, and the UN will shrug at them.

2

u/fail-deadly- Sep 09 '22

The thing about MAD is that it has to be both sides risk total annihilation from a war. While a NK EMP attack could probably wreck the United States, there is no way they could kill most Americans with their arsenal. The U.S. on the other hand could ravage North Korea with nuclear weapons. The fact this isn't a MAD situation, leads me to believe the U.S. will show restraint.

1

u/Lsugger Sep 09 '22

Even the biggest emp can only disrupt a few city blocks and that's only for a few minutes at best, they're not some crazy super weapon. Also THAAD and our naval based anti ballistic missile defense would probably do a damn good job at stopping the 3 nukes they send. Also fuck restraint, it's a nuke, wipe out their capacity to fight with a unified force. Then follow it up with Desert Storm v2 baby!

Despite crippling sanctions, Pyongyang has conducted six nuclear tests between 2006 and 2017.

No stupid questions, but how does one cripple North Korea with sanctions? It's already isolated

Based on consensus it's not even a threat

3

u/NewJaguar7470 Sep 09 '22

They’re isolated because of sanctions. They still do some trade with China, Russia, Syria, and some African nations, and if sanctions were lifted then they’d trade far more. Sanctions also allow for the seizure of millions of dollars of North Korean products.

The problems that Russia has just found out, it's one thing to be a nuclear weapon state, but if you were to use a nuclear weapon, the response would be so terrible that it would be the destruction of the nuclear weapons state that used them, the Sampson outcome as it were...

Nuclear weapons are useful to make threats with, but you would be absolutely fucking stupid to actually use them. As Russia is now finding out, it should have invested more in this conventional forces then all the whizbang nuclear submarines, and nuclear weapons that's frankly will never be used.

0

u/inflated_ballsack Sep 09 '22

Nah. You can absolutely use nuclear weapons, just against a non nuclear armed state. Americans nuked the living shit out of Japan and won the war. Putin made the biggest mistake of his career by trying to reason with Zelensky. Should have nuked Kyiv, won the war in a day, and saved millions of russians the hassle. Americans also considered nuking Vietnam. I don't know why Russians are afraid of using their biggest asset.

Edit: Why is the BBC right wing trash that everyone in the U.K. gets taxed for?

North Korea has passed a law declaring itself to be a nuclear weapons state, according to state news agency KCNA.

The country's leader Kim Jong-un called the decision "irreversible" and ruled out the possibility of any talks on denuclearisation, it said.

The law also enshrines the country's right to use a pre-emptive nuclear strike to protect itself.

Despite crippling sanctions, Pyongyang has conducted six nuclear tests between 2006 and 2017.

It has continued to advance its military capability - in breach of United Nations Security Council resolutions - to threaten its neighbours and potentially even bring the US mainland within striking range.

Mr Kim carried long-range launches and nuclear tests in 2019 following two headline-grabbing but inconclusive summits with then US president Donald Trump.

What we know about N Korea's missile and nuclear programme Wargaming a North Korean attack But talks between the countries have since stalled. Although the Biden administration has indicated it's willing to talk to Pyongyang, it hasn't said whether President Joe Biden would meet Mr Kim.

The White House also said its attempts to contact Pyongyang and overtures of help over its Covid outbreak had gone unanswered so far.

The US reviewed its North Korea policy last year and reiterated that "complete denuclearisation" of the Korean peninsula was the goal. Mr Biden said he would pursue it with a mix of diplomacy and "stern deterrence". Mr Kim responded by saying his country must prepare for both "dialogue and confrontation".

Meanwhile, tensions on the Korean peninsula have spiked this year with Pyongyang firing a record number of ballistic missiles.

South Korea and the US have responded with a volley of missiles and the largest joint military exercises on the peninsula in years
