I’m so glad things are better for him.

u/ChipNASA Sep 27 '22

I 100% agree.

All I knew was I saw this picture and like who is that dude wait a minute that’s the guy from Encino Man ?

And then I remembered vaguely hearing the entire backstory about him being blackballed and all that.

I’m terribly conflicted that I feel so absolutely sad and horrified for him but also absolutely hopeful and proud and thankful at the same time.

u/ClaimedBeauty Sep 27 '22

I recently bought encino man so I can share the awesomeness with my children

And so yes, this is worth 88 of your minutes.

Hey don't sleep on John Hannah's character either. He has a certain British appeal.

25

Yea that movie and it's sequel are great.

All the people are super hot and the action scenes are bang on.

I enjoy it more than Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider and I love them too.

Omg, one of the most underrated movies ever. Sissy Spacek being blitzed on martinis for 30 years trapped in a bunker is my role model. "Oh, and son... there's also something called a liquor store. Write that down."

It’s so bittersweet. Like terrible what happened, but great that things are looking up

40

u/ikatatlo Sep 27 '22

What terrible thing happened?

243

u/hawaiiiik Sep 27 '22

In 2018, Fraser alleged that he was sexually assaulted by Philip Berk, the then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, at a luncheon in the summer of 2003. The assault, his subsequent divorce, and the death of his mother launched Fraser into a depression that, combined with his health issues, led to a pause in his career. Several publications and social media users interpreted that Fraser was "blacklisted" from Hollywood for speaking out about the sexual assault. However, Fraser said he would not use the term and was doubtful that the decline in his career had anything to do with the incident. In his 2019 appearance on the radio show Sway in the Morning, Fraser said "I don't think the HFPA really wield that much power. This was not an executive, this was a former president of that organization which is essentially journalists."

181

u/scribbleaddict Sep 27 '22

Apparently he was also forced to pay child support to his ex wife at a rate of $900,000 per year, for 10 years until she remarried. He has remained unmarried, and it seems an outlandish amount of money to me. He even appealed to the court in 2013 saying he couldn't afford it.

141

u/father2shanes Sep 27 '22

Dont forget hes had tons of accidents in doing movie stunts.

Partially replaced knee cap.

Had his spinal column bolted and compressed multiple times because a few times it didnt work

Had his vocal cords repaired.

Honestly surprised the guys not in a whee chair.

55

u/scribbleaddict Sep 27 '22

Oh yeah, you're totally right. He had all sorts of medical issues and expenses. I also read his mother died right around the time of his divorce too, and so he was deeply depressed and had to take some steps back from his career for a bit.

5

u/everyting_is_taken Sep 27 '22

Honestly surprised the guys not in a whee chair.

That sounds fun, where can I get one? Wheeeeee!

73

u/mule_roany_mare Sep 27 '22

It blows my mind that a judge can decide how much money you should make & determine how much you owe based on it.

How many people end up divorced because they were overworked? Now a judge uses that as precedent & says you owe X.

Right at the same time your other expenses explode & you need a new home too? People generally don’t get divorced because life was too good & too easy.

If you were already overworked what are you supposed to do? Go from 80 hours a week to 100?

At minimum a judge should be limited to considering a 40 hour work week, but humans should be allowed to change careers, lose jobs, get sick, move, or retire.

19

u/generallydislikable Sep 27 '22

There's some old logic to it. Essentially, if the couple is at a certain standard of living, the threat of losing that standard should not be a deterrent when it comes to divorce. IE you shouldn't be feel coerced into staying married to someone you don't like because of a threat of poverty or loss of social status.

This logic however doesn't always work, and like you said there are situations where the judge doesn't gauge the wealth disparity properly.

30

u/Left_Independence963 Sep 27 '22

Child support should be based on the national average wage and not someone’s specific wage. The idea is to provide for the child so that the child has all The basic necessities in life not to make the child super rich or impoverished.

26

u/SunriseGobby Sep 27 '22

That would fuck over poor dads.

→ More replies

14

u/JediWebSurf Sep 27 '22

I agree. $900k in child support is ridiculous! Like wtf. It's the child the second coming of Jesus Christ or something!? No kid needs a million dollars a year.

17

u/popandfroosh Sep 27 '22

I'm willing to bet a lot of it didn't actually go to the kid.

goddamn that episode of scrubs hit me so hard

"Where do you think we are?"

fucking brutal

52

u/RTSUbiytsa Sep 27 '22

I think the only reason I don't really like that episode is because everybody tries to put it over My Lunch.

Nothing is as heartbreaking in that show as watching Cox go against all of his own advice and tear himself apart for a mistake that everybody around him is trying to console him over. Watching a character just utterly determined to tear themselves down like that is just pure torture.

26

u/Scottish_Hot_Rod Sep 27 '22

Agreed. "My Lunch" is the most gut-wrenching episode of that show. Seeing Cox so beaten down, defeated and devoid of confidence isn't anything we'd seen before. Plus playing The Fray over the montage at the end is just asking for your tears.

4

u/SickBag Sep 27 '22 edited Sep 29 '22

When does that happen?

I'm watching for the first time and I'm around the point that Cox has found out the Baby is his and I've seen the Brenden episode as well.

Im in my early 30s, people who don't really remember the late 90s/early 2000s really don't understand that this guy was a household name that suddenly dropped off. The mummy movies were pretty big (maybe bigger to me because I was 10) and the comedies he was in like Encino Man and Blast from the Past were watched by pretty much everybody.

He was probably one of the most famous people to drop off completely like that.

200

u/ClaimedBeauty Sep 27 '22

And the history is so sad! I’m so glad he’s coming back to film, I’ve missed his work.

26

u/lashapel Sep 27 '22

117

u/beigs Sep 27 '22

He was a part of the me too movement as well, over a decade after it happened.

I never followed Hollywood gossip so I always thought that he had just made a career change or started a family. Maybe he had done what he wanted, got the money, got tired of the fame and then went off to do whatever he likes. It's sad that he wasn't as fine as I assumed but then again it would have been a big leap to think otherwise.

Honestly I can somewhat relate to this. I don't remember when I have been recognized for my efforts. I get that it's selfish thing to think and I'm not asking for any price but it's starting to be a little depressing since I do my best and I don't even get a proper thank you..

289

u/ClaimedBeauty Sep 27 '22

Hey you, life can be hard but I know that you’re doing your best and I’m proud of you.

84

u/yeetus_christ420 Sep 27 '22

Thanks homie. It really is not easy.

44

u/Delta9_TetraHydro Sep 27 '22

Your username made me chuckle.

14

u/raptorboi Sep 27 '22

I personally think the best way to deal with this is to simply work towards things you want.

Like owning that particular car, or owning a home, or to get that job that you excel in (and isn't soul crushing), or go on that trip to wherever, and finally : to be content with what you have.

As for a proper thank you - we Redditors thank you!! o7

8

u/yeetus_christ420 Sep 27 '22

I mean I am working toward something constantly but the feeling is still there. And also thank you. o7

12

u/TheRealClose Sep 27 '22

It’s not selfish to want some validation/acknowledgment of your work. Different people need different kinds of appreciation.

5

u/yeetus_christ420 Sep 27 '22

I guess but it still feels wrong to think I deserve to be praised for something. I feel like if I do good enough work I will be praised for it and if I don't then I won't get praised for it.

5

u/TheRealClose Sep 27 '22

Unfortunately the world doesn’t tend to work that way. Most people just don’t compliment or thank each other for their work. Most people don’t like the awkwardness of the confrontation or want to give others feelings of power.

30

u/EffableLemming Sep 27 '22

It is not selfish, at least in the negative way to understand that word. Wanting at least some recognition is perfectly valid and normal. As with wanting attention, we are social animals after all and crave peer acceptance. It's only an issue if one becomes obsessed with it.

13

u/yeetus_christ420 Sep 27 '22

I guess you're right, still it feels wrong to think I deserve any recognition.

7

u/brandyofthedamned Sep 27 '22

You’re not alone and it’s not selfish.

Not being recognised for my efforts at work, no compensation and I’ve not had a raise in over 2 years.

Even though I know I’m worthy of much more than what’s been handed to me, It’s starting to bring down my self-worth.

It’s definitely taken a toll on my energy, I’m not motivated enough to find another job because I’ve started to believe I’m not capable of getting a better one.

6

u/Hounmlayn Sep 27 '22

Just a little thought to move on with.

Try complimenting others more. It may seem counterintuitive, since you want it, but people feel uneasy conplimenting other people, unless they are confident in themselves first. Be the first person to compliment someone else, and they will feel more comfortable to tell you how their feel about you and your work in the future.

Of course, not everyone will reciprocate, but that's okay. Someone else may see you compliment, or they may end up talking about you in a more lighter tone to others, which may result in compliments elsewhere.

It may not happen overnight, but I swear it works. I never used to get compliments until I started doing it first, now those people seem to compliment my work a lot more often, and more enthusiastically. And when other people see us interact, they get in that zone too, and by complimenting them, they do the same back.

I would honestly put Brendan Fraser up there with Robin Williams and Jim Carrey for how important he was in movies for kids growing up in the 90s.

Mrs Doubtfire, Hook, Ace Venture, The Mask, George of the Jungle, The Mummy.

All huge parts of my childhood.

53

u/random_nightmare Sep 27 '22

George of the Jungle, The Mummy, Looney toons Back in Action and Bedazzled.

15

u/IanZee Sep 27 '22

And Monkeybone!

Personally I enjoy him way more than Robin Williams. I can never see anyone apart from Robin Williams in his movies. He's a bit like Tom Cruise, a great actor but he's always playing Tom Cruise.

Not sure if everyone picks up on this. The modesty, to an aggressive point, and strong emotional reactions to genuine appreciation is a pretty huge sign of emotional trauma.

I really don't know what he went through but I'm really happy things are going better for him now, he's a great human.

57

u/RizzMustbolt Sep 27 '22

He should have gotten nominated for Gods & Monsters, but that's when all the trouble started for him.

18

u/Radica1Faith Sep 27 '22

What trouble? I'm out of the loop

66

u/RizzMustbolt Sep 27 '22

He was sexually assaulted at an industry party by a producer and was blackballed for speaking out against it.

26

u/eaglebtc Sep 27 '22

It was the erstwhile president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. And yes, it was terrible.

50

u/hawaiiiik Sep 27 '22

He wasn't blacklisted:

73

u/Delvaris Sep 27 '22

He was sexually assaulted by some powerful fuck in Hollywood. He wouldn't be quiet about it and got blackballed for years.

IIRC

15

u/hawaiiiik Sep 27 '22

Amazing how so many in here could just google what actually happened instead of misquoting:

In 2018, Fraser alleged that he was sexually assaulted by Philip Berk, the then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, at a luncheon in the summer of 2003. The assault, his subsequent divorce, and the death of his mother launched Fraser into a depression that, combined with his health issues, led to a pause in his career. 22

u/Fresh-String1990 Sep 27 '22

It should be noted, that Brendan Frasier himself has said he doesn't think he was blackballed. The guy wasn't a Hollywood exec. He was in charge of the Foreign Press. They don't really control casting or production.

Again, this is all from Brendan himself.

He just went through a deep period of depression due to his divorce and injuries and so wasn't acting as much. Plus, like even when he was at the height of his career, it was more due to his looks and charm. Which is harder to bank on the older you get.

So happy for Brendan.

i am so hoping to meet him at new york comic con to get my scrubs dvd set autographed.

And im just gonna tell him i havnt paid for anything media related in about 12 years but for the whale and killers of the flower moon imma make a exception and buy a ticket to show my support for him.

105

u/SusheeMonster Sep 27 '22

And im just gonna tell him i havnt paid for anything media related in about 12 years

Please don't say this. He's going to be polite about it, but it'll hurt

50

u/ok_krypton Sep 27 '22

tell him he's great and you're looking forward to seeing more of his projects

23

u/Altruistic-Pop6696 Sep 27 '22

Why would it hurt him to be told "I'm not going to pirate your films even though I usually pirate everything else"?

16

u/TheRealClose Sep 27 '22

Tbh it’s just a stupid thing to put yourself as a pirate that typical doesn’t give a fuck about supporting the people who work so hard to create films for you.

considering how hes been treated by the industry i somehow doubt he would not be understanding as to why i choose to not support a massive garbage fire of assorted industries.

hell i cant even be selective now with how i vote with my wallet with streaming services taking over. supporting something made by the platform means i have to support the whole platform.

primary reason im paying almost 200 bucks to get Christopher lloyds autograph and almost 300 for fox. cant find a better way to show my support

7

u/jesuspunk Sep 27 '22

what a waste of money

6

u/FuckingKilljoy Sep 27 '22

Yeah I don't think Christopher Lloyd is hurting for money lol

I completely understand wanting to support your favourite creators but man there's so many better causes and I imagine Michael J Fox would much rather have that money go to a parkinsons charity

12

u/hawaiiiik Sep 27 '22

For the record he was not blacklisted by the industry if that's what you meant:

In 2018, Fraser alleged that he was sexually assaulted by Philip Berk, the then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, at a luncheon in the summer of 2003. The assault, his subsequent divorce, and the death of his mother launched Fraser into a depression that, combined with his health issues, led to a pause in his career. I'm out of the loop, what happened to him?

I remember him being awesome in the Mummy movies (the first two), and I thought Bedazzled was a good movie.

Did he just not get more acting jobs?
