It's an idea that was first documented on 4chans paranormal board, otherwise known as /x/.
The basic premise of the backrooms is that it's like no-clipping through a wall in a videogame, which takes you to a behind-the scenes area you weren't meant to see.
The most popular content creator for The Backrooms is Kane Pixels on youtube, their version of it involves some corporation accidentally discovering a way into the backrooms before they start learning that it's filled with weird entities. Everything in the backrooms is like a simulacrum or a photocopy, but copied multiple times to the point where it becomes a funhouse mirror distorted perversion of what it's a copy of.

It’s an internet creepypasta on the concept that there is an other-worldly maze of rooms that you can accidentally enter at any time by randomly “clipping” through a wall or something in our world. The story has become more popular, so there are a few video games based on it.

Not for nothing there’s some ketamine trip reports that have folks wandering around empty, unfurnished office buildings.

It's where employees go to stand still, check their phones, and take a breather, before going back out and telling a Karen that no we don't have more in the back closet

There used to be video rental stores and that's where the porn tapes were located

It’s kinda like standing on a tight rope. You are the person on that right rope. You can go only on the top. But there’s also a flee. The flee can go between the rope and on top of the rope, but humans can’t. If something were to make a strong enough force to pull these realities together, this would happen. harshly pokes pen through paper plate

It's a lot of Internet fiction, loosely inspired by the SCP project, about the idea that you can fall out of reality and end up in a series of rooms that are like the backstage of the real world. Like clipping out of bounds in a video game.
A lot of people like writing stories and doing art about this concept, but there isn't any official media it's taken from.
